Patience Creighton has run her family’sĀ boarding school for girls ever since her father died and her brother took off. One night a strange man shows up at the door badly beaten. The man is William Sterling–who happens to own the land that Patience’s school occupies. He’s found himself in a bit of financial trouble and must decide how best to get the money to satisfy his creditors. An obvious solution would be to sell the land occupied by the school for development, but William doesn’t know if he canĀ bring himself to do it especially once he’s begun to spend more time with Patience and the girls she teaches.
This is the second book in the “Whispers on the Moors” series, but it also acts well as a stand alone book. William is the brother of one of the main characters in the first book,Ā The Heiress of Winterwood,Ā and is briefly mentioned in this book, but does not make an appearance.Ā I’m not sure what officially classifies books as being “regency era” but by my definition this one fits. So if you tend to like those, you might like this.
The thing I like about this series is that they are romances, but they are also very appropriate. Man and woman fall in love, but they fall in love based on personality and intellect–not how they perform in the bedroom. Amazon even goes so far as to put these books in the “Christian Fiction” category even though the characters aren’t overlyĀ religious.
Okay, okay on to the content. I thought Patience was a great character because she obviously loved what she was doing. She was having a hard time with her mother and her brother was MIA, but she still seemed really happy running the school. William was also a good character because he was flawed but repentant and was trying to become a better person. Luckily, Patience was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. There aren’t too many surprises in this book, I think you’ll be able to tell pretty early where things are headed, but it’s still a fun (and clean!) read.
