Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic and this week’s topic is: Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly Want To Read A Book
1) Written by one of my auto-read authors: Sarah Dessen, Morgan Matson, Jennifer E Smith, Marissa Meyer, etc.
2) Pretty cover. Sometimes this doesn’t last past my reading the synopsis, but for at least a brief moment a pretty cover will make me covet a book like nothing else.
3) A good review from a blogger I trust.
4) Fairy tale retelling (I love them all).
5) Steampunk elements.
6) Celebrity romance trope. I don’t know why, but I just love these.
7) Features a road trip. Road trips are so fun and they’re even more fun when you’re not actually stuck in the car for 13 straight hours.
8) Also, any travel basically. I love exploring new places but don’t have the means to actually do it in person. That’s why books are so great!
9) Smart, female protagonists. I love reading books featuring girls who are smart and unapologetic but are also normal.
10) Strong female friendships. There’s nothing more powerful to me than a healthy relationship between two girls. They get each other and don’t start drama with each other over boys.
Oh my god, we have pretty much the same auto-read authors!! I haven’t read any Jennifer E Smith, though. Where do you think I should start?
And I totally agree on strong female friendships. I love reading them more than any love stories!

I think the first one I read by her was “This is What Happy looks Like”. It has my beloved celebrity romance trope in it, so there’s that. I also really loved “The Comeback Season” which I felt was a little deeper, but if you don’t like baseball than you might not like it as much as I did.

Thanks! I’m going to check those books out. I don’t like sports in general, but that’s never stopped me from reading books that have them as the main theme before, so I guess we’ll see with The Comeback Season 🙂

I love fairy tale retellings and have recently gotten into steampunk (thank you, Cassandra Clare). Great list!

Thanks! If you like steampunk, I highly recommend checking out Gail Carriger if you haven’t already! I love her Etiquette and Espionage series.

You gotta grab Red Sister by Mark Lawrence by all means: Strong female protagonist and strong female friendships.

Thank you so much for the rec! Sorry about my late responding–your comment seems to have been caught in my spam filter for some reason. That book sounds amazing though!

I love books with strong female friendships. It is so rare and can add a lot to the story when done well.

I totally agree! Every time I’m reading a book and the main character gets in a fight with her best friend over a boy, I roll my eyes. I really appreciate when authors take the time to make female friendships more than just a series of passive aggressive competitions with each other.

So many of these are reasons I read books, too! Auto-read authors probably should top my list. I’m always searching out their books. Nice list!

Definitely any Marissa Meyer, and Meg Cabot for me. And numbers 4, 5, 9, and 10.

You know, I never really read much Meg Cabot back in the day. I should give her a try! You’ve inspired me! 🙂

I love her stuff! They are hilariously funny, and can be really sweet and heartwarming. My favorite is The Mediator books and the Heather Wells Mysteries.

Strong female friendships are SO scare in YA which is such a shame! I definitely want to see more books like that and am always looking for more! Any recs?

Yes! Off the top of my head, I really loved The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord. Then the To All the Boy I’ve Loved Before series by Jenny Han has a great sister dynamic. That’s all I can really think of right now…I’ll keep thinking and maybe I’ll do a post on it!

Oh nice! I’ll definitely check out The Start of Me and You. I really enjoyed the sister dynamics in Jenny Han’s first book, but I haven’t finished the trilogy yet. YES please do a post! Beautiful Broken Things explored it really well for me, and then there’s some stellar pairings in Sic of Crows/Crooked Kingdom. But other than that I’m drawing a blank…

Yes, the Six of Crows duology would definitely make the list. Good call!

I didn’t have it on my list, but strong female relationships is definitely something that will make me want to read a book. Or not even necessarily female, but any good, solid friendship I love.

I do enjoy fairy tale retellings, but I especially love Greek mythology retellings.

Oh yes, those are some of my favorites as well! And I totally agree with you about finished series. There’s nothing better than discovering a series and then realizing you can binge it 🙂
