Hello everyone! I’ve recently started buying books again now that I’m out of college. I have two large bookshelves (the kind you get from Ikea) and I’m having a really tough time figuring out how to organize them! Right now I have one bookshelf that has standalone books and movies and such while my other one has series’ and some other bookish trinkets. The problem is that my standalone bookshelf is way too full, but I’m at a loss for how else to organize my books! How do you guys organize your books and how would you suggest I organize mine? I have a large variety of YA books as well as some miscellaneous sports books (my husband’s) and some Econ-type books as well (mine).
I’ve been thinking about this too. Right now they are by sizeish. But I’m thinking about doing it alphabetical by author. Or maybe just straight up just alphabetical.

I’ve thought about alphabetical by author too…I like that idea because it’s clearly organized and it keeps series’ together.

I usually organize mine based on size and if it’s a series, I’ll put them together too. Usually my hardbacks will be together and then I put my paperbacks together too.

That’s a good idea! I might have to try something like that.

I usually organize mine on the basis of author so you can find exactly what you’re looking for. And then maybe the standalones by genre – classics, mystery, chicklit etc.

That’s a good idea! Thank you!

That’s kind of what I started doing. I put them in order of size and author. It’s not alphabetical, but I have all my small paperbacks on one side, authors together. Then the larger paperbacks, then the hardcovers. If I have a series in hardback and paperback, they go somewhere in the middle. But I do tend to keep my authors together. It’s a little weird lol

My books are organised alphabetically by author and when a series is involved I put them in the order you would read them as I don’t like having them all jumbled up.

Thanks! I think this is kind of what I’m leaning towards doing too.

I organized mine into TBR and already read, I just recently did this and I’m liking it so far. If you have a lot of books that you haven’t read yet, or even ones that you want to read again then this system works great. Also if you are a huge book buyer and are always bringing books home its a good system because then the shelf never empties. You could also go with a classic and go alphabetically by author if you don’t mind the stand alone being mixed with series.

That is a great idea! I definitely own a lot of books that I haven’t read yet, but want to.

It’s really helped me out because now I can see them all in one place and I have more motivation to pick up some series that I need to read.

Yeah, I can totally see that. I think that might be just what I need!

Being a librarian, I organize mine like we do at the library. Adult, YA, and Children’s separate, and then alphabetical by author. If there is a series, I put those in series order where ever they fit in the alphabetical order scheme. For nonfiction, I have them by dewey categories, but not exact number, because I am not a cataloger and am not spending my time figuring out the exact call number of the books.

I love that idea! I think I do want to separate my non-fiction from my fiction books for sure. Thank you!

Your welcome. If you need help on the general categories let me know, although I’m sure you can find it online somewhere. It just makes it so much easier to find, especially if you don’t remember the author, you can just go to that section of your shelf.

Maybe you could organise it by genre? Or even by books you’ve read and books that have yet to be read? xoxo

Great ideas! I would never have thought to sort out my TBR books, but I’m definitely leaning that way!

1) Build Ikea shelf. 2) Put book in/on said shelf. 3) Admire.
I WISH I HAD SHELVINGGGGGG. Everything is on tables for me…or the floor…or in boxes.
Cheers,

Haha okay, good suggestions. I’ll admit, it was really hard for me to want to get bookshelves because I know my husband and I are just going to be moving again within the next 12 months, but I think it’s been a good thing overall.

You could try organizing by color. That would add a nice to touch to whatever room the bookshelf is in, especially since you have lots of YA and those are usually colorful. I organize mine by genre, it makes the books easier to find but doesn’t add to the room’s decor.

That’s a good idea! I saw someone on here do that and it looks way cool.
