Born of Deception is the second book in a series so this review may contain spoilers if you have not read the first book, Born of Illusion.
Anna has finally made it to London. She’s ready to start her career as a magician, meet other sensitives like her, and spend more time with the handsome Cole. But just as she feels like she’s getting the hang of things in a new country, sensitives are being attacked and Cole is becoming more and more distant. At the same time, she’s battling her growing attraction to Bronco Billy, a cowboy who she’s been touring with. Anna is having a hard time figuring out who she can trust, but she knows that she needs to make a decision before it’s too late and someone else gets hurt.
I remember really liking the first book so I was excited to finally get my hands on this one but I ended up feeling pretty let down unfortunately. The main character, Anna, just wasn’t doing it for me. She seemed really petty and insecure. I didn’t like that she kept going between Bronco Billy and Cole. Not because I felt like she was betraying Cole (I actually ended up liking Billy better) but because I just wanted her to choose! Make up your mind and stick to it sister. It seemed like the main reason she was having a hard time choosing was because she was so insecure about her relationship with Cole–which didn’t make sense because she can sense his emotions so…how can there be any question how he feels?
The second thing that was so annoying to me was all of the descriptions of how beautiful Cole and Calypso and Billy were. Just give me one character description and that’s good enough. But describing how beautiful someone is literally every time they’re mentioned is a little much. It’s like…I get it, they’re good looking, let’s move on alright? These couple of things made it really hard for me to remember what I even liked about the first book. I definitely don’t see me reading anything else from this series. I’m not sure if there will be a third book, but there is a novella that I was going to read but…I’m not anymore.
One last thing, there were times in the book when I didn’t trust anyone. Combining that with the fact that I was having a hard time with the main character/narrator meant it was hard for me to really get into the book and want to keep reading. There were just no characters urging me to turn the page and keep reading–no one really pulled me into their world. Overall, not really a fan of this one.
