Emily and Sloane met by chance. Emily was just out for a run when a frantic Sloane asks for help breaking into her own house. After that, they’re best friends. Sloane is always making lists for Emily to complete. Sometimes she does but more often she’ll get a few items done and ignore the rest. Sloane is the one who’s helped Emily to come out of her shell, so when Sloane and her parents disappear without notice, Emily isn’t sure what to do with herself. At least until the final list arrives. Emily is determined to do everything on the list hoping that by doing so, she’ll be able to find out where Sloane went and why she didn’t even say goodbye.
I really enjoyed this book because Emily’s character experienced so much growth. It’s not often that you feel like the main character you finish with is a completely different person than who you started the book with and that’s really what happened here. She starts out as somewhat of a shy character who is seriously lost without Sloane. It’s really nice to see her becoming a confident person who still loves Sloane, but doesn’t depend on her so much. The one thing I liked is that (SPOILER) when she finds Sloane, it’s obvious that they were actually codependent on each other despite what we were led to believe in the beginning. It just seems like the best kind of friendship–the kind of best friendship that every girl craves.
It was also fun to think about the list that Sloane left Emily. Why did she choose some of the items that she did? And how would I go about accomplishing some of them? I know for a fact that if I had received that list, some of it would have gone uncompleted. Lastly, I really liked how the list brought people together. Emily met some people that she never would have met without Sloane and developed some lasting friendships from that as well. Overall, I thought this book was a fun, touching read with a great cast of characters.
